Two housing stocks in one small town

Hallsville is unusual in having both at once. There are houses here from when this was a railroad town and a timber town, built by people who worked at the sawmills, with joinery cut on site and rooms that were never square. And there is a great deal of very recent building, because the town has grown fast enough in the last decade to go from one traffic light to six.

Those two need opposite work. An old house needs cabinetry scribed to walls that are out of true and trim matched to profiles nobody stocks. A new house needs the builder's shortcuts corrected and the storage the plan left out. We do both, and the first thing we will tell you is which one you have.

In an older house

Factory cabinets assume square walls and standard heights, and an 1890s or 1930s house offers neither. Building to the actual opening means the run goes wall to wall, the corner becomes usable instead of a void, and the gap beside the chimney becomes a cupboard. Where original trim has to be matched, we take a section and cut to the profile rather than fitting the nearest stock molding.

In a newer one

Builder-grade units look fine on day one and fail predictably: thin carcasses, stapled drawer boxes, runners rated well below what a family loads on them. If the carcasses are sound, new fronts and proper hardware transform the kitchen cheaply. If water has got into particle board, replacing fronts on a failing box is money thrown away. That distinction takes five minutes standing in the kitchen and it decides the whole cost.

Storage, in both kinds of house

Mudroom benches with hooks, cubbies and boot storage. Pantry runs deep enough to be useful. Laundry cabinetry. Built-in desks. Window seats with storage under. Bookcases fitted into an alcove so they read as part of the house. Garage, barn and workshop storage built to hold weight rather than to look tidy.

Questions we get from Hallsville

My house is old and nothing is square. Is that a problem?

No, it is the normal condition. The out-of-true gets measured and built in rather than discovered on fitting day.

My kitchen came with the house and is falling apart. What are my options?

Two, and they cost very differently. If the carcasses are sound, new fronts and hardware. If water has got into the particle board, replacing fronts is money thrown away. We will tell you which.

Do you do barn and workshop storage?

Yes, and built to hold weight rather than to look tidy in a catalog.

Do you work in Hallsville?

Yes. It is about thirty-five minutes east of the Kilgore shop on Highway 80.
