Table Refinishing for Dining and Kitchen Tables
The dining table takes more use than any other piece of furniture in the house. We refinish worn and water-marked table tops, repair loose bases and leaves, and give the whole table a finish built for daily meals.
Why tables wear out first
A table top is the one surface in the house that meets hot plates, cold glasses, elbows, homework and spilled tea every day. The finish on it wears faster than the finish on any other piece, and once it is worn through, water gets into the wood.
Table refinishing covers more than a new coat. The top is stripped and repaired, the base is checked and tightened, the leaves are matched to the rest of the table, and the new finish is chosen for a surface that gets wiped down after every meal.
We refinish dining tables, kitchen tables, drop-leaf and pedestal tables, coffee and end tables, and the occasional farm table that has spent years on a porch. If yours is a family piece with some age, read our antique furniture restoration page before you decide to strip it.

Common table problems and what fixes them
White or cloudy rings
Moisture trapped in the finish. Often treatable at the surface without a full refinish.
Black rings and stains
Water that reached the wood. Usually needs the finish off and the stain worked out of the wood.
Worn-through finish
Bare spots where hands and plates rest. A refinish puts protection back.
Cupped or split top
Uneven moisture or a top screwed down too tightly. Fixed by flattening or regluing and refastening so the wood can move.
Wobbly base
Loose joints at the aprons, legs or pedestal, taken apart and reglued.
Sticking leaves
Slides and pins cleaned, repaired or replaced so the table opens again.
Why tops crack, and how a refinished top avoids it
Solid wood swells and shrinks across its width as the humidity changes, and barely at all along its length. A top that is screwed tightly to its base cannot move, so in a dry season something gives: a glue line opens or the board splits.
Fine Woodworking describes several ways to fasten a top so it can move, such as wooden buttons in a slot or slotted screw holes. When we have a top off for refinishing, we check how it was attached and correct it if it was locked down.
Cupping, where a top bows up at the edges or the middle, often comes from one face taking on or losing moisture faster than the other, for example when the underside was never finished. A refinish that seals both faces evenly helps keep it flat.

Chairs with the table
Most dining tables come with a set of chairs that need help too: a loose rung, a split seat, worn finish on the back rails. We can refinish the chairs to match, and repair or recane seats. See chair caning and chair repair. Thinking of a new table instead? Our custom dining tables are built in the same shop.
Common questions
Can you refinish just the table top?
Often, yes, when the base is in good shape and the new top can be matched to it. If the color has to change, or the legs are as worn as the top, refinishing the whole table gives a more even result.
Can white water rings be removed without refinishing?
Many can. A white or cloudy ring usually means moisture is trapped in the finish, not in the wood, and it can often be treated at the surface. A black ring means water reached the wood itself, which usually takes more work and sometimes a refinish.
Can a table with a veneer top be refinished?
Yes, with care. Veneer is a thin layer of wood, so it can only be sanded lightly and any lifted or chipped areas are repaired first. We check how thick it is before deciding how to strip it. See our guide to fixing furniture veneer.
How long does table refinishing take?
It depends on the size of the table, the repairs and what is already in the shop, and finishes need time to cure before the table goes back into daily use. You get a realistic time when we quote.
Do you repair wobbly table legs and bases?
Yes. Loose aprons, legs and pedestal bases are taken apart where needed, cleaned and reglued, and broken parts are repaired or remade.
Send a photo and we will tell you what it needs.
A phone picture is plenty. You will hear what the piece needs, what it will cost and roughly how long it will take before anything starts.
