The Antique Capital of East Texas has a furniture problem

The Texas Legislature gave Gladewater that title in 1995, and the downtown antique trade is why people drive in from Dallas and Shreveport to spend a Saturday here. Which means more old furniture moves through this town, per head of population, than anywhere else in the region.

Old furniture that changes hands is old furniture that needs work. A piece that has stood in a booth for two years has dried out and its glue joints have let go. A buyer who carried something home on Sunday finds out on Monday that the drawer will not run and one leg is short. And a dealer with a good piece and a bad finish is leaving money on the table every time somebody walks past it.

Two kinds of customer, opposite ends of the same job

If you sell here, a piece that has been properly repaired and finished sells faster and for more, and it costs less to get there than most dealers assume. We can work to a trade margin rather than a retail one, and on a run of pieces rather than one at a time.

If you have just bought something and want it right before it goes into the room, that is the same work from the other side. Bring it, or send a photo and we will tell you what it needs before you commit to anything.

Know what not to strip

This matters more in Gladewater than anywhere else on our list, because the pieces here are older and the money is in the originality. Stripping a genuinely old piece back to bare wood can take value straight out of it. The original finish, tired as it looks, is part of what a buyer is paying for.

A clean, a wax and careful touching-in often reads better in a booth than a full refinish, and costs a good deal less. We will say when that is the right call even though it is less work for us. Where a finish genuinely is past saving, we will say that too.

What comes in

Loose and broken joints. Drawers that bind, drop or sit crooked. Lifted or blistered veneer. Water rings and heat marks. Sun-faded tops. Split boards, cracked legs, missing moldings that have to be cut to match rather than ordered. Replacement runners and glides. Chairs re-glued and clamped properly rather than screwed and hoped over.

Fifteen minutes down the road

The shop is in Kilgore, about fifteen minutes from downtown Gladewater, so a piece can go back and forth without much fuss and without a delivery charge that swallows the repair. Start with a photo. That is usually enough for a real number.

Questions we get from Gladewater

Do you do trade work for dealers?

Yes, and at a trade rate on multiple pieces. If you have a run of things that need the same treatment, that is easier and cheaper than one-offs.

Will refinishing hurt the value of an antique?

It can, and we will tell you when we think it would. On a genuinely old piece the original finish is part of what it is worth.

Do you collect from Gladewater?

Yes. It is about fifteen minutes from the Kilgore shop, so collection and return is straightforward.

How much does it cost?

It depends on the piece, so nothing is quoted sight unseen. A photo is usually enough to get you a real number.
