Furniture Refinishing in Kilgore and East Texas

When a finish is worn through, water-marked, sun-faded or the wrong color for the room, refinishing gives the wood a new surface. We take the old finish off properly, fix what is loose, and build up a new stain and topcoat.

What furniture refinishing is

Refinishing means replacing the finish: the old coating is removed down to bare wood, the surface is prepared, and a new stain and protective finish are built up in coats. West Virginia University Extension describes it the same way, and separates it from restoration, which keeps the original finish.

It is the right call when the finish is past saving: worn through on the arms and edges, crazed and flaking, blackened by water that got into the wood, or simply a color that no longer suits the house. It is the wrong call when a cleaning and a few touch-ups would bring the old finish back, which is why we look first.

Dressers, chests, dining tables and chairs, china cabinets and hutches, armoires, desks, rocking chairs and church pews all come through our shop for refinishing. The gallery shows refinished pieces and a few caught halfway through stripping.

Revive, refinish or paint?

ApproachWhat happensBest for
Clean and reviveGrime and old wax removed, scratches and dull spots treated, finish left onSound finishes that are just tired; antiques with original finish

Fine Woodworking calls stripping the "nuclear option" and recommends reviving any finish that is still in reasonable shape. We agree, and we will tell you when your piece only needs the lighter treatment.

How we refinish a piece

  1. Find out what the finish isShellac, lacquer, varnish and oil finishes each behave differently. Knowing which is on the piece decides how it comes off and what can go back on.
  2. Repairs firstLoose joints reglued, veneer laid back down, chips filled and missing parts made before any new finish goes on.
  3. Remove the old finishTaken off carefully so carvings, edges and thin veneer are not damaged.
  4. Prepare the woodSanded smooth, stains and marks dealt with, and the grain prepared for color.
  5. Color and finishStain matched to your sample or your room, then a protective topcoat built up in thin coats.

Keeping a new finish looking new

Wood keeps moving after it is refinished. The American Institute for Conservation advises keeping furniture where relative humidity stays roughly between 40 and 60 percent, away from heating and cooling vents and out of direct sun. In an East Texas house that swings from damp spring to dry air conditioning, that means not parking a dresser on top of a floor register.

Day to day, dust with a soft cloth, use coasters and trivets, and wipe spills instead of letting them sit. If a ring or a cloudy patch appears, call before trying a home remedy; many marks are in the finish rather than the wood and are easier to fix early.

Common questions

Where can I get my furniture refinished near me?

Grace Woodwork refinishes wood furniture in our shop in Kilgore. We take work from Longview, Tyler, Henderson, Marshall, Gladewater and the other towns on our furniture repair page, and we can pick up and deliver larger pieces.

Does refinishing ruin the value of antique furniture?

It can on a rare or valuable antique, where collectors pay for the original finish. On most older family pieces, careful work does not hurt value, and a revived finish can be the better job. If a piece might be rare, get it appraised before anyone strips it. See antique furniture restoration.

How much does furniture refinishing cost?

Each piece is priced after a photo or a look in person. Our furniture refinishing cost guide lists published national price ranges by piece and what pushes a job up or down.

Can you change the color of my furniture?

Yes. A piece can go darker with stain, lighter after stripping, or be painted. Going much lighter on a dark piece takes more work, because the old color has to come out of the wood first.

Can a worn finish be fixed without stripping it?

Often. A finish that is dull, grimy or lightly scratched but still sound can be cleaned and revived, which is quicker and cheaper than stripping. We check this first.

Send a photo and we will tell you what it needs.

A phone picture is plenty. You will hear what the piece needs, what it will cost and roughly how long it will take before anything starts.
