Newer houses, and where they run short

Most of White Oak went up after the war, and a lot of it a good deal more recently. Houses like that do not have the problems of an 1880s place — the walls are square and the ceilings are a standard height. What they have instead is a shortage of anything built in. No pantry worth the name, one shallow coat closet by the front door, a laundry with a washer and nowhere to put anything down.

So the custom work here is less about fitting awkward spaces and more about adding what the builder left out. A mudroom bench with hooks and cubbies. A proper pantry run. Shelving in the garage that will hold weight. A window seat with storage under it in a bay that currently holds nothing.

Furniture built for a house with children in it

White Oak is a family town — the school district is what most people move here for, and household incomes are among the higher ones in Gregg County. That combination produces a particular kind of request: something better than what the furniture store sells, built to last through the whole of childhood rather than to be replaced twice.

A dining table in solid timber will take a decade of homework, craft projects and hot dishes and can be sanded back and refinished afterwards. A laminate one cannot. That is the real argument for having it built, and it is a cost-per-year argument rather than a luxury one.

What gets built

Dining and farmhouse tables. Bench seating, which takes more children than chairs do and slides out of the way. Bed frames, bunks and children's furniture. Toy and blanket chests. Console and sofa tables. Bookcases and shelving. Window seats. Coffee tables. Step stools. Garage and workshop storage. Kitchen islands.

There is a crew here, not one pair of hands

Grace Woodwork is several people, which matters when a job is a set rather than a piece. Matching bed frames for two rooms do not take twice as long, and a larger job does not sit waiting on one person to work through it in order.

How a build starts

With a measurement and an idea, and a photograph of the space. From there we talk timber, finish, price and timing, and nothing is cut until you have a real number. White Oak is about twenty minutes from the shop and we deliver and install rather than leaving it in the driveway.

Questions we get from White Oak

Do you deliver to White Oak?

Yes, and we install. It is about twenty minutes from the Kilgore shop.

Can you build children's furniture?

Yes — bed frames, bunks, toy chests, step stools and bench seating, built to take real use.

Is solid timber worth the extra over a store table?

Over ten years, usually. It can be sanded back and refinished; laminate cannot. That is the honest argument, and it is about cost per year rather than luxury.

What timber do you use?

Pine, oak and cedar most often, and reclaimed timber when a piece calls for it.
