Houses from a town that stopped growing

Troup peaked as a railroad town and then settled. What that leaves is housing stock largely from the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, in rooms laid out before anybody made furniture to standard dimensions — high ceilings, narrow doorways, and fireplaces sitting where a modern plan would never put them.

Shop-bought furniture in a house like that always looks slightly wrong, and usually is. Building to the room is the only reliable way to get something that fits and looks like it belongs.

Four churches by 1892, and they still need furniture

Small East Texas towns run a great deal of their life through their churches, and those buildings need things nobody sells in a shop — communion tables, lecterns, pew repairs and extensions, and fellowship hall tables that seat properly and store flat.

We do that work and quote it plainly, because it usually comes out of a committee budget rather than a household one and nobody wants a surprise at the end.

What gets built

Dining and farmhouse tables at whatever length the room takes. Benches, which seat more people than chairs and slide out of the way. Bed frames, often built to come apart so they will go up an old stair. Console and sofa tables. Bookcases and shelving run to the real ceiling height. Coffee tables. Blanket chests. Children's step stools. Plant stands. Kitchen islands.

There is a crew here, not one pair of hands

Grace Woodwork is several people. A set of matching pieces does not take proportionally longer than one, and a job with a fixed date does not sit waiting on a single person to work through the list in order.

How a build starts

With a measurement and an idea, and a photograph of the room. Then timber, finish, price and timing, and nothing is cut until you have a real number. Troup is about forty minutes from the shop and we deliver and install.

Questions we get from Troup

Do you deliver to Troup?

Yes, and we install. It is about forty minutes from the Kilgore shop.

Can you build something that will go up an old stair?

Yes — usually by building it to come apart. That is a common requirement in older houses.

Do you do church and hall furniture?

Yes. Communion tables, lecterns, pew repairs and hall tables, quoted plainly.

What timber do you use?

Pine, oak and cedar most often, and reclaimed timber when a piece calls for it.
