Ten miles, and that changes the arithmetic

Overton is the nearest town to this shop. Ten miles north of Kilgore, fifteen minutes each way. That matters more than it sounds on a repair, because on a small job the travel can cost as much as the work — and here it does not.

It also means you can drop something off and pick it up without making a day of it, and we can come and look at a piece that is too awkward to move before deciding anything.

A town that boomed and then halved

Overton was laid out in 1873 where two railroad lines were meant to meet, on ground the Choctaw, Chickasaw and Creek knew as Tiyuk Hekia, Standing Pine. It was a farming town until the oil came. Then the population went from 426 in 1931 to three thousand by 1933 and four and a half thousand by 1936 — the town got through the Depression better than most of the country did.

After the war it halved, down to about two thousand by the 1950s, and it has stayed near that ever since. What that history leaves behind is a lot of housing built fast in the mid-1930s for a population that later moved away, which is why there is more period furniture per household here than the town's size suggests.

What comes in

Loose and broken joints. Chairs that rock. Drawers that bind, drop or sit crooked. Lifted and blistered veneer — very common on 1930s pieces, where the veneer was thin and the glue was not made to last ninety years. Water rings, heat marks and sun-faded tops. Split boards and cracked legs. Missing moldings cut to match rather than ordered.

What to leave alone

On a genuinely old piece the original finish is part of what it is worth, and stripping it cannot be undone. Cleaning, waxing and careful touching-in is often the better job and always the cheaper one. Where something is marked in a way that looks deliberate or personal, we ask before removing it.

Start with a photo

A phone picture is usually enough to say whether something is a straightforward fix or a bigger job, and roughly what it runs. Nothing starts before you have a real number. And being fifteen minutes away, if it is easier for us to come and look, we will.

Questions we get from Overton

How far are you from Overton?

Ten miles. Fifteen minutes each way, which is why collection and return does not add much to a small job here.

Can you come and look at something too big to move?

Yes. Being this close, that is straightforward.

The veneer is lifting on a 1930s chest. Fixable?

Usually, and it is one of the commonest jobs we see from this area. Thin period veneer over old glue does exactly that.

How much does it cost?

It depends entirely on the piece, so nothing is quoted sight unseen. A photo is usually enough for a real number.
