Close by, and glad of the work

New London sits in north-western Rusk County, between Henderson and Overton, about twenty minutes south of the shop. It is a small community and a short run for us, which means collection and return costs very little on a job of any size.

Most of what comes to us from around here is family furniture — pieces that have been in the same houses a long time and are worth keeping properly rather than replacing.

Repair is usually cheaper than replacing

On anything built before about 1980, what you already own is better made than what the same money would buy new. A chair that has started to rock needs taking apart, the old glue cleaning out and gluing properly — not replacing. Done well it will outlast whatever you would have bought.

What comes in

Loose and broken joints. Chairs that rock. Drawers that bind, drop or sit crooked. Lifted and blistered veneer. Water rings, heat marks and sun-faded tops. Split boards and cracked legs. Missing moldings cut to match rather than ordered. Church pews, which come up regularly.

What to leave alone

On a genuinely old piece the original finish is part of what it is worth and stripping it cannot be undone. Cleaning, waxing and careful touching-in is often the better job and always the cheaper one. Where a piece is marked in a way that looks deliberate or personal, we ask before removing it, because that is not our call to make.

How to start

Send a photo from your phone. That is usually enough to say whether it is a simple fix or a bigger job, and roughly what it runs. Nothing starts before you have a real number, and we collect and return rather than expecting you to move furniture yourself.

Questions we get from New London

How far are you from New London?

About twenty minutes. Collection and return adds very little to a job.

Is one chair too small a job?

No. One chair is a perfectly normal job.

Is it worth repairing rather than replacing?

On anything built before about 1980, almost always. What you own is better made than the replacement would be.

How much does it cost?

It depends on the piece, so nothing is quoted sight unseen. A photo is usually enough for a real number.
